How To Make Easy Homemade Laundry Detergent

It seems that the washer never gets a break these days…

Here’s an easy recipe for making up your own laundry powder.
Its pretty straightforward to make and it’ll save you loads of money over the “bulked out” branded stuff.

Ingredients and Equipment

Fels naptha

  • A bar of soap – Fels Naphtha and Zote are sold as Laundry bars but you can use any bar soap really.
  • 1 cup of Arm and Hammer washing Soda
  • 1 cup of Borax
  • I got all mine without difficulty from my local store.
  • Cheese grater – or food processor/blender (makes it easier but not essential)
  • Mixing bowl

Step 1 – Grate the soap bar as fine as you can into the mixing bowl.

Step 2 – Add a cupful of Borax


Step 3 – Add a cupful of washing Soda

Washing Soda

Stir thoroughly until all the ingredients are mixed together.

Step 4 – At this point you can add a few drops of lavender or orange oil

Smells great! Mix it in thoroughly.

Step 5 – Store in a sealable jar.

Use 1 – 2 heaped Tbsp per load. Scale up the ingredients to make a bucketful and you’ll have enough to last a year!
